LAKEWOOD  - Wearing a Lakewood BlueClaws shirt, Donald Brown made his way through well-wishers and autograph seekers on the FirstEnergy Park concourse Tuesday evening.

Then, from the front of the pitching rubber prior to the BlueClaws game, the former Red Bank Catholic High School and UConn star, selected by the Indianapolis Colts with the 27th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, tossed a lollipop, left-handed offering that gently found the glove of Lakewood pitcher Justin De Fratus squatting behind the plate.

Buster, Lakewood's mascot, called it a strike.

"I wanted to take it light on the pitcher," kidded the 5-foot-10, 208-pound Brown, the only running back selected in the draft by Indianapolis.

"He wasn't wearing any gear," Brown said of De Fratus. "I didn't want to throw my heat out there."

It's been a whirl wind of activity since the draft for Brown who said he has attended Colts rookie camp, then flies to Los Angeles Thursday for Rookie Premier, a gathering of NFL rookies who will have their pictures taken for trading cards companies.

"I know Knowshon (Moreno) will be out there and a couple of other guys," Brown said.

Brown said he met Peyton Manning at the rookie camp but did not practice with him.

Following the Rookie Premier function, it'll be off to another Indianapolis preseason camp.

With Dominic Rhodes (3.5 yards per carry) signing as a free agent with Buffalo, the Colts' only proven running back is 26-year-old and somewhat injury-prone Joseph Addai, who rushed for 544 yards on 155 carries last season.

"I still have a long ways to go," Brown said. "I still need to learn the offense and take it from there."

Brown led NCAA Division I in rushing last season with 2,083 yards and 18 TD, and rushed for 3,800 yards and 33 TD in his three years at UConn.
